Sunday Mass and Holy Day Readings John R. Tuesday, May 14, 2013

Question:

Can you tell me if Liturgical Law for Sunday and Holy Days of Obligation contain St. Paul's warning in 1 Corinthians 11 of the danger in receiving the Lord's Body and Blood in an unworthy manner? And, that in doing so, one will bring upon himself, the Lord's condemnation?

Thank you,

John R.

Dear John:

I have moved your question to the Faith and Spirituality Forum because this question is really a followup to your previous question that I answered. Also, this question is actually not about liturgical law.

1 Corinthians 11:27 is not in the readings for Sundays or Holy Days of Obligation that I can find. So What?

The Church usually uses by positive teaching. From the positive teaching of the Bible and the Church one would have to have an IQ of 10 to not know that one must be in a State of Grace before receiving the Eucharist.

With that said, when we do have a bunch of idiots who do not understand this, or who understand it and not care, then it is up to the priests and bishops to offer a negative teaching about what a person should not do.

A priest is not restricted to the reading of 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 which is in the Lectionary. He may at any time he needs mention the negative consequences explained in verse 27 when it is necessary.

I would advise you John to be careful about scrupulosity. The Church teaches the way she does on the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. It is not for us to criticize the Church's choice of Readings. We have not the competence to make such criticism.

However, we do have an canonical right to be concerned about our Church. Thus, if we see a weakness in our priests to make clear the Church's teaching on this or any other subject, we have a right to approach our priests with respect and in a business-like manner to discuss our concerns. If the priest is not responsive, then we have a right to contact the bishop. I would encourage you to do that.

But, do not express a scrupulous desire for the Church to change the Readings of the Lectionary to suit you, or to think negatively about the Church because the Lectionary does not include a verse you want. We have not the right or competence to do that.

Remember, even if verse 27 was in the readings it does not mean the priest will mention it in his homily, and, when it is not in the readings it does not mean that the priest cannot include it and the topic in his homily. Any priest can preach about this if they choose to. The question is why some priest never mention it. That is a legitimate question.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
