Question:

Dear Brother - I am a husband and a father of 3 children. I have been unemployed for almost 3 years now. And although I have a decent educational qualification I got stuck with a line of experience (13 years) for which there seems to be no market. I find myself literally unemployable and can't seem to figure out how to get back. By God's grace, my family left me some money which I now manage by way of investing in the stock market ((extremely conservative) and other fixed income avenues. I am not a day trader but what I do is look for mis-priced opportunities that have a reasonably high probability of correcting itself in the medium to long term horizon. These opportunities exist because of capital market inefficiencies. I am not sure if this will help me take care of my family in the long run but this is what I do now. Is this line of work (money management) a sin? I produce nothing and have nothing to show. Is day trading (which is not what I do) a sin? Help me figure out how to think about this whole thing properly.

Regards
JA

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r)

Dear Joe:

I apologize for the delay in answering. Since you did not leave your email address to be notified when the question is answered I hope that you see this answer. Situations like this is one of the reasons we ask for email addresses, which are not kept by us after answering the question and never used for any other purpose. It is just to notify the person that their question has been answered.

Anyway, to your question.

There is nothing sinful about living off of investments. The mandates of living the Christian life remain regardless of how we make a living. We are to give to the poor, be generous with our money, and our time. In fact, if you can live off investments you have a great opportunity to serve God and His People. Since you are not encumbered by a time clock for work you have the freedom to volunteer for some apostolate or start your own apostolate to honor God and serve Him and others.

You have a great opportunity. Cease it.

While you have the time given by the grace you have to provide for your family through investments, give that time to God and to your family.

For myself, I am disabled and cannot work a gainful job. This is a blessing in that I receive a VA disability pension which then allows me to do that which I am doing now in answering Q&As, spiritual direction, deliverance counseling, and the rest. I do these things within the limitations of my disabilities, but I have a freedom to offer my time to do this apostolate that I would not have if I worked a regular job.

So, rejoice that you have been given the grace and freedom to support your family without a regular job, and to then offer your time to do the work of God in whatever way He calls you.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
