John 14:2 Nathan Saturday, February 16, 2013

Question:

It reads "In my Father's house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you?" Some versions read "many rooms", others "many mansions". I have heard it say this is referring to different creeds, religions and referring to different religions here on earth, while others say it is referring to heaven.

Some say that Jesus is referring to a place He has prepared for us in heaven where we will worship Him together with our guardian angel. If Jesus has prepared a place for us and it is indeed waiting for us in heaven, then what about those that reject Him. Does that place remain empty? Did He prepare it for us in vain. I know that that cant be true cause Jesus being God would know if we will reject Him at the end or not. Please explain.
and thank you very much.

Dear Nathan:

There many people who have wishful thinking that the many rooms refer to difference creeds or to many religions. That is false and a wishful thinking that could lead one to hell.

Jesus has prepared a place for those who will go to heaven. Those that reject him and go to hell will not have a room or mansion in heaven as they will not be in heaven.

To quote from the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible commentary on John 14:2 ~

My father's house is a similar expression used in John 2:16 for the Jerusalem Temple, adding that the Father's house is a heavenly sanctuary (Revelation 21:22) perched high above in the heavenly Jerusalem (Galatians 4:26; Revelation 21:1). This is the eternal dwelling where the glorified Angels and Saints worship the Lord in the eternal liturgy (Hebrews 12:22-24; Revelation 4–5) (CCC 2795). The phrase many rooms is similar to the Herodian Temple in Jerusalem, which had several courts for worship, chambers for storage, and living quarters for priests.

It is my own view that the different rooms/mansions may relate to rewards we will receive in heaven. Some will have more rewards than others. Depending on our good works on earth, how we lived our lives, we will receive various rewards, which in turn, may determine where in God's heavenly kingdom we will be assigned.

This should not be of concern for anyone. I would be happy to be a lowly private assigned to a cottage in the back-forty far from the main mansion in heaven, than to be a General assigned to the big house in hell.

Here are some of the verses in the Bible referring to awards to which may form the basis of which room we are assigned in heaven:

Rev 22:12 ~ Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done.

Jer 17:10 ~ I the LORD search the heart and examine the mind, to reward a man according to his conduct, according to what his deeds deserve.

Matt 16:27 ~ For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what he has done.

Psalm 62:12 ~ And that you, O Lord, are loving. Surely you will reward each person according to what he has done.

Luke 6:35 ~ But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.

Prov 11:18 ~ The wicked man earns deceptive wages, but he who sows righteousness reaps a sure reward.

Matt 6:19,20 ~ "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.

Matt 19:21 ~ Jesus said to him, "If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me."

Matt 5:19 ~ Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
