Question:

Dear Brother what is the differance between catholic and catholic orthodox. Thanks

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), LTh, DD

Dear Frances:

There is no such thing as "Catholic Orthodox", but there is an orthodox Catholic.

In the world is the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church. The Orthodox Churches in the east went into its major schism (left communion with the Catholic Church) in the 12th Century.

Thus, these are two different ecclesial communities, both of which has valid Sacraments.

Since the word "orthodox" means "right thinking" we Catholics can use the word, with a small "o", meaning that we are loyal and obedient to the Pope and Magisterium of the Catholic Church. We are "right thinking" with the Church.

To confuse things more there is a Greek Orthodox Church, for example, that is not in communion with Rome. And there is the Byzantine Rite of the Catholic Church, which is also a Greek Church, but who are in communion with Rome.

See a previous answer for more information about the different Rites in the Catholic Church.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
