Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), LTh, DD
Dear John:
You seem to be missing the point. No one cares what you think, what your opinion is about this. All that matters is what the Church teaches. Since you disagree with a part of what the Church teaches about homosexuals, then the burden of proof is on you. I have no requirements to prove what the Church has clearly taught. The teaching is what it is and it is the Church, not you or me, who has been given the charism and authority to determine dogma, doctrine, and all other teachings of the faith. Also, the Church does not have to proof itself to you. You must prove your opinion to the Church. As I mentioned in the last post, same-sex sexual acts are grave sin and is Level 2 teaching that is infallible, and you agree. But, the other surrounding teaching discussed in the Catechism is, at the very least, Level 3 teaching to which you are required to offer your Religious submission of will and intellect. This is a requirement if you wish to remain in communion with the Church even if you disagree with the teaching. It is possible to disagree with Level 3 teaching, but the presumption must always be in favor of the Church's teaching. If you wish to disagree then you must provide demonstrable documentary evidence, not opinion or your interpretation of the Bible or the Catechism. As I said your opinions and interpretations are meaningless. The evidence that you propose must show the Church is wrong "beyond a reasonable doubt." That is the highest level of proof. That evidence will be, for example, the writings of popes, saints, and loyal theologians, and perhaps medical evidence. Again, this must be self-evident in their writings, not your interpretations of those writings. I suspect you may be a ultra-traditionalist, who have the arrogance that they know more than the Church and, in their fantasy, think they have the charism to declare teaching and to interpret Church teaching according to their own opinions. Sorry, but those guys have no authority and are mostly not in communion with the Church. They are a sorry lot, who are essentially the same as liberals — thinking they get to interpret teaching as they please — two sides of the same arrogant coin. Anyway, once you have gathered this evidence (not your opinions or interpretations), then write it up and send it to your Bishop. If your evidence fails the "beyond a reasonable doubt" test as determined by competent authorities (not you), then you must accept the teaching "as is" and give Religious submission of will and intellect. If you do not then you are arrogant beyond belief and will be in danger of losing communion with the Church. You admit that you are not competent on the complex issues of human sexuality. That being the case, you certainly seem to act like you have competence. You are intruding upon medical issues for which you have no competence and you are intruding upon theological and ecclesial issues to which you also have no competence. I would suggest some humility and stop pretending you are the Magisterium. God Bless, Footer Notes: This forum is for general questions on the faith.
