Profession of Faith | May | Sunday, October 3, 2004 |
Question: Hello, Today, I lectored at my parish at 5 PM Mass. I was asked by my pastor to read the Prayer Intentions right after a special blessing for people who serve in various parish ministries. I hesitated to get up to read the Prayer Intentions right after the blessing because it seemed that my priest skipped the Profession of Faith. He motioned me to get up to read the Prayer Intentions. And, so I did. I kept waiting to see when we'd say the Profession of Faith, which is always before the Liturgy of the Eucharist, if I'm not mistaken. I remember there have been times at this parish (and other parishes that I've visited) where the Profession of Faith hasn't been said. Is this something to be concerned about? What are the consequences if a priest accidentally omits the Profession of Faith versus if it was planned omission? Thank you and God bless, May |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM+
Dear May: The only time that the Profession of Faith may be omitted on Sundays and Solemnities, as far as I know, is in a Mass where an Ordination of a priest or deacon takes place, the religious profession of a brother or sister, and situations like that. Otherwise, the Profession of Faith must be said on Sundays and Solemnities. In daily Masses it is optional. The Mass is still valid even if the Priest deliberately omits the Profession of Faith during Masses where it is required. I believe, however, that if a priest deliberate disobeys the rubrics of the Liturgy that the Bishop should be made aware of it.
