The play "The Last Days of Judas Escariot" Chas Friday, August 31, 2012

Question:

Dear Brother,
Are you familiar with this comedy play by Stephen Adly Guirgis? It has gotten some positive reviews as been very funny and entertaining. But you know how the media is; anything sacrilegious and mocking God is considered fashionable.

I have a nephew who aspires to be an actor. He started college and auditioned for this play. He does not think he will get a part in the play though. However, he was telling me a little bit about this play and first of all it grossly misinterprets Catholic teaching regarding Purgatory. Supposedly Judas is in Purgatory and a court hearing is held to determine his fate. We all know that Purgatory is not a second chance. The setting is in NYC and present day language is used. Some of the characters are Jesus, Mother Teresa, St. Monica, Caiaphas, Satan and others. I understand it has plenty of vulgarity even St. Monica using the m-f word. I told my nephew that if this play in anyway is mocking the Church, Jesus, or the Saints, he should not in any way participate in it. Your thoughts please and thank you.

Question Answered by

Dear Chas:

I have not heard about this play, but if it is what you describe then your nephew ought not to be part of it.

To aspire to be a professional actor is a very hard road to travel, especially if one has values at all, let alone Christian values. Any actor must be true to their personal values and not allow the Devil to seduce them. Each actor must make hard decisions and must think about in advance what lines they will not cross in this profession.

I have an acquaintance, Carlos Espinosa, who is CEO/President of an actors studio in Los Angeles (Culver City) called Holy Wood Acting Studio. Their mission statement says:

Remember that you, artists, are the custodians of beauty in the world.

Our mission is to prepare and form our students to become excellent actors and powerful couriers of truth and beauty through media to the world.

The mission of Holy Wood Acting Studio is to prepare our actors to take a leading role in guiding these great media to that moral center that, in the past, proved that fictional drama can be honest, entertaining, popular, important and influential. All of our courses emphasize personal and professional growth and development, not limiting such growth to acting potential but also transforming the trainees into leaders in their family lives and community as well. In other words, graduates of Holy Wood Acting Studio can be counted upon to MAKE A DIFFERENCE in the lives of all they touch.

Carlos has told me that his vision is to re-consecrate Los Angeles. The city was once consecrated to God, which may be why the devil has taken over there.

Carlos explained to me that:

In addition to improving students acting skills and providing aspiring actors with the necessary tools to excel as professionals, we teach them how to love themselves as much as God loves them which will give the future actor really strong confidence in our Personal Growth and Development program. We train our students to be powerful leaders since their career as actors naturally requires them to lead masses from the screen in our Leadership program. In Health and Fitness integrated with Theology of the Body students become aware of their own dignity and rediscover their beauty. They learn to enhance and maintain their body with exciting classes and exercises challenging them to become the awesome person God intended for them to be. This all encompassing program will give students the strength needed not only to avoid the dangers of fame and money but to be stewards of these gifts in a great way to lead and to bring light to millions. We understand that acting is not only a job, its a calling.

We want people to know our mission which is to form torches of Light and curriers of beauty as John Paul II said, for the media.

If your nephew is serious about acting, this is the acting school I would recommend.
