Modernist/Liberal Theology? John Thursday, July 19, 2012

Question:

Hi, Fr Ignatius -

I hope all is well.

Would you please comment on this citation from the Thomas More Center. It's taken from a blog from one of the presenters of the Center, and I would really appreciate your insights. To my way of thinking, this is modernist rubbish and is absolutely heretical!

Here is the citation:-

"Recently, my nephew and his wife were trying to explain Easter to their first grader. They said she was troubled by the idea of it all. I’d say for any child, the image of a man coming out of tomb would be an unusual thing for them to think about, and maybe even a bit scary.

Recently I was reading a commentary by a priest with whom I studied at St. Louis University. His name is Roger Karban, of the Belleville, IL diocese. After reading his commentary on the Resurrection, here is my summary of some of his ideas.

The empty tomb image was the only way the New Testament authors could think of to tell a faith reality that existed in the hearts of the early communities. Neither they nor the authors had had eyewitness experiences of historical Jesus or the resurrection. It was purely a faith conviction. The only Jesus they experienced was the Jesus we experience today. But they had a big problem - how to convey a huge and overwhelming spiritual reality of resurrection (passed on down orally from the first apostles and Mary) -- so they had to express it all through stories, like the "empty tomb" and Jesus "appearing" and Thomas putting his fingers in the "wounds," etc.

It is like trying to describe an awesome experience of love. We are left with having to use images. Resurrection means that after we die we will all be together even our pets will be with us!. We will all know one another and there will be no pain or limitation. Every atom of creation will be restored and we will all sparkle! Makes us all want to be happy and good now!".

The presenter is denying that the authors of the New Testament (particularly the apostles) were eyewitnesses of Christ (either before His death and resurrection or His resurrection appearances). This is blasphemous rubbish! Would you agree?

I look forward to hearing from you soon!

God bless you richly -
JOHN

Question Answered by

Dear John:

You are correct. This person who is asserting this nonsense is not only a full-blown heretic, but is no longer Christian if he believe the Resurrection is only a "story." The Resurrection of Jesus from the grave by his own power is a dogma of the faith. This fella, is therefore, automatically excommunicated.

His bishop should be informed.

In addition, this fella is denying the extra-biblical historical evidence that is available from writers of the time. In addition, St.Paul mentions that there were more than 500 people who witnessed Jesus alive after his crucifixion and burial. He also appeared to people who were hostile or unconvinced. It would not have been possible for the Apostles to make up the story as there were too many witnesses to the real thing (Cf.  1 Corinthians 15:5-8;  John 20; Luke 24:37). Many witnesses would have exposed the Apostles as frauds had they tried to explain away the Resurrection has "just a story."

The burden of proof, by the way, in on those people who reject this evidence.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
