Question:

Hello Brother Ignatius Mary:

I saw on another site the approved ways to obtain a Plenary Indulgence which always involves going to the Sacrament of Confession. What happens if I want to obtain a Plenary Indulgence and just went to confession and the Feast day or another way to obtain the indulgence is 1-3 weeks away from my confession? Does my confession "count"? - My Church only offers confession on Saturday. I always feel so awkward going to confession so frequently. But I feel since I receive the Eucharist every day, I want to be as close as possible to the Lord in a state of grace... I usually have venial sins, and sometimes there is a line and I do not want to take up time for another. I also sense that my priest is very busy so going more than every 2 -3 weeks would really make me feel out of place. But, I would want the Plenary Indulgence.

Tomorrow is The Feast of Apostles Peter and Paul. According to the Plenary Indulgence guidelines, I should have a blessed article. I do, a image of Jesus and the Miraculous Medal. It also states to say the Profession of Faith (along with a prayer for the Pope). So, what do I do? Go to Church and say the prayers with my medal on? Or, with the image of Jesus. Then go to confession next week? Or this week?

Thank you Brother Ignatius Mary.

I do have a few more questions but I feel I will give others your time and will return a bit down the road.

Blessings,
Christina

Question Answered by

Dear Christina:

Follow the guidelines for Plenary Indulgences as written. If the guidelines do not say anything about requiring the sacramental be taken with you to a Church, or going to a Church at all, then it is not required. Anything required will be specifically stated. It would be an act of cruelty to require something and not tell a person about it.

Confession can be a few days before or after the day of the Indulgence. If the only Confession available is on Saturdays, then go the Saturday before or the Saturday after the day you do the work of the Indulgence.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
