One hour fast before Eucharist | Christina | Thursday, June 28, 2012 |
Question: Ok, Brother Ignatius Mary, So, ugh! It had been my attempt to make it to Church a hour before mass for my Holy Hour but I realized that I got there only 1/2 hour before mass. (Mass during the week is only 1/2 hour long). Anyway, during mass I felt in my heart that I just couldn't receive the Eucharist because I did not fast for one hour. I knew this, I was fully aware and should have made note of the time but too lazy and drank the Diet Pepsi anyway. It was difficult, I really wanted to receive the Eucharist but to do so without the utmost reverence would be, I think, a mortal sin. Or maybe grave. In my case, I think it was would have been a mortal sin so I skipped the Eucharist. Brother Ignatius Mary, if I took the Eucharist would I have committed a mortal sin? Of course, the Priest looked at me as did others. But, who cares! At least I didn't hurt my Lord! So, now I think I can continue to receive the Eucharist because in the past I may have missed the one hour fast before mass but that was because I was given inaccurate advise from the priest - not on my own cognition. Right? - I will still confess the sin when I go to confession, but I think it is a venial sin now. |

Question Answered by
Dear Christina: People are so concerned about whether a sin is mortal or not. We are not sin at all. Since the Church teaches that venial sins are also good to bring to Confession, if you have any doubts, confess it. You correctly did not receive the Eucharist because you were not sure about the fast. Good. God Bless, Footer Notes: This forum is for general questions on the faith.
