Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r)
Dear Edward: Unwanted thoughts that pop into your mind are not sinful as long as you do not entertain them but try to pop them back out of your mind. To do that a diversionary strategy may be helpful. For example, recite a poem you learned in school, or the Preamble of the U.S. Constitution, or the famous portion from the Declaration of Independence, or some other passage you have learned, or think about the items you need to buy at the grocery store. The point is to get your mind thinking about something else completely different. Since there is no sin in unwanted thoughts that are not entertained, there is nothing to confess. But, since the Sacrament of Confession is also a sacrament of healing and strengthening, you might want to talk about it to your confessor. The Sacrament may help to stop these thoughts. We cannot dismiss the spiritual warfare possibilities of your experience. Thus, I also recommend the Prayer To Control Thoughts.
