Question Answered by
Dear Anthony: While there is no extant ancient example of a son addressing his mother in this way, we do know that addressing a female as "woman" was a title of respect and endearment. We find examples of this is John 2:4; 4:21; 8:10; and 20:13. Genesis 3:15 is the reverse of the instance at the Wedding at Cana (John 2:4). In Genesis, the Eve prompted Adam to to defy the Lord and drag the human family into sin. At Cana, our Blessed Mother, the New Eve, prompts Jesus, the New Adam, to initiate his mission of salvation.
