Question Title Posted By Question Date
what to do with Bayside believer Bob Sunday, March 18, 2012

Question:

Bro. Ignatius Mary,

I use Facebook to connect with other Catholics. I connected with a lady who it turns out believes in the so-called "Bayside apparitions", which were condemned by the bishop. I and another person have warned her about those false apparitions. I even pointed out to her the canon that requires obedience to the bishop in such matters. All to no avail. She and other believers in Bayside claim that the proper procedure wasn't followed. Do they believe Our Lord will accept that lame excuse?

We have very many mutual friends on FB, although she's the only one I've found who believes in Bayside. She otherwise seems like an obedient and faithul Catholic. She is pleasant enough and I would like to be friends with her, but I don't want to scandalize anyone or lead people to think I believe in Bayside, too.

Please advise.

Thanks and God bless,
Bob

Question Answered by

Dear Bob:

All you can do is to pray for her. These people, I believe, have developed a psychological disorder. They are obsessed with the false seer of Bayside even to the point of rebellion against the Bishop.

Bayside is an excellent example of how we should take with a grain of salt all unapproved seers and apparitions. People get so married to these apparitions that when the Church condemns it, they cannot let go.

There is a lesson in that for everyone. DO NOT get emotionally involved in any apparition that has not been approved.

Medjugorje groupies fall into this same dysfunctional trap. Medjugorje has been declared by the local bishops as not coming from supernatural sources. The Holy See has prohibited official pilgrimages lead by priests. Personally, I think one of the reasons that these alledged apparitions have been going on an unprecendented three decades is that it is a strategy to keep the Church from making a final judgment. As long as the so-called apparition continues the Holy See cannot judge it.

That, plus the way the seers' live there live is major evidence that Medjugorie is false.

There is no talking to these people. Frankly, such groupies have elevated private revelations above God and his Public Revelation. It is a form of idolatry. Anyone who reads private revelation messages more than the Bible, is way out of line, and is ripe and vulnerable for demonic influence.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
