Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), L.Th., D.D.
Dear Iosephus: The primary universal law in the Old Testament is the Ten Commandments. The first three Commandments pertain to the love of God; the next seven Commandments pertain to the love of neighbor. Jesus fulfilled the law of the Old Testament, and brought a new Law a Love, expressed in the Two Great Commandments: (Matt 22:37-40) "And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend (hang) all the law and the prophets." This is a summary and the crux of the Ten Commandments. All the rest of the many laws and regulations of the Jews were for the Jews to obey and please God, or to make the Jews a distinct people apart from other nations (food and clothing regulations), or to teach Jews how to worship God and atone for sin (the sacrificial system). There were many regulations for ritual cleanliness, treatment of animals, dietary rules, prohibited food (such as swine, which may have be related to cooking technology since swine must be cooked very well to prevent poisoning), and many other regulations. The Jewish leaders burdened down the people with many regulations, to which Jesus criticized when he said, "They bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men's shoulders" (Matt 23:4). Jesus fulfilled the law, which extinguished all the old regulations that were for Israel alone, and bought a new covenant under the Law of Love, which is the only law God intended as He of Love. This is not to say that there are no regulations today. Since we are under a New Covenant (the Chair of Peter's Magisterium) and not the Covenant of Moses (the Chair of Moses' Magisterium) (e.g., Matt 23:2), it is the Church who is authorized to promulgate regulations to help us in our Christian lives. Thus, as the Jews were taught how to worship God and to atone for their sin through their sacrificial system, so we are taught how to worship God through liturgical law. We learn how to atone for sins through the Sacramental system of the Church. We have marriage laws, liturgical laws, ecclesiastical laws, etc. all to which apply and our binding upon us today. I hope this helps. God Bless,
