Question:

Dear Brother:
I have a friend who is an Agnostic yet very spiritual, as she always has a positive attitude, is generous and does charitable work, and says blessings for others.

Over the holidays, we had a conversation regarding faith and religion. I asked her why she had doubts about Christ and because Christmas is such a joyous time; doesn't she feel lonely around this time of the year. She explained to me, that she doesn't exactly not believe, but has her doubts.

Reason being is, that several years ago my friend stated that she began to experience a lot of misfortunes, as she had financial problems, her love life changed, and her health began to detriorate,as she started getting bad headaches, anxiety and depression, fatigue, and muscles spasms.

She went to several doctors, who found absolutely nothing wrong with her and because my friend is an ex-Catholic she said many prayers for healing, attended Mass, however nothing changed.

She told me that she explained her situation to one of her neighbors who referred her to a Spiritual Advisor that she went to see. In seeing this person, they revealed that she had a curse on her that was placed by her best friend at the time, due to jealousy and the reading she received was accurate. The Advisor told her of certain baths to take and candles to burn, which she did and the curse was broken. Since then, she renounced her religion because while she was experiencing these conditions; although she prayed, she felt that God did not help her.

She also has a problem in believing as she stated that if God is a loving God as everyone believes, why are people living in poverty, are sick, and why do so many innocent people get hurt and how come these things are not prevented by God.

As a believer, I wish my friend would think otherwise about God, but I can understand her too. Because if my friend did have a curse on her; why didn't God show her where and what was happening to her and why do others experience so much misfortune? Also if someone is experiencing health related problems due to a curse, should they say prayers for healing or deliverance?

I will never give up on my faith, but if you could answer this question so I can get a broader prospective; it would be helpful.

Thank you,
and God Bless,
Jasmine

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), L.Th., D.D.

Dear Jasmine:

The neighbor to your friend complicated matters considerably. This "spiritual advisor" is obviously not Christian. What this "advisor" says should be taken with a big grain of salt. Your friend probably was not cursed.

The advise of this "advisor" to break the curse is supersitution at best, and demonic at worse.  Actually, the new age curse-breaking method may have placed a curse on her. In any event any curse present was not broken, it merely took a different form of inspiring her to abandon her faith.

People are always trying to climb a mountain when it is only a little bump in the road. It is not hard to understand why evil exists, why bad things happen to good people, why there is poverty, sickness, etc. The answer is Free Will.

God does not will these things upon us. We choose to behave in certain ways that cause certain consequences. Or, others choose to behave in such a way that their choose effects us. We suffer the consequnces of other people's sin.

Or, we suffer the consequence of original sin and a fallen world. Natural disasters are a consequence of the fall of Adam and Eve.

God gave us free will so that we can choose to love Him. Love cannot be forced, it must be chosen. But, we can abuse that gift of free will and choose against God. Without free will we would be nothing more than animals.

Without free will, your friend could not choose to be agnostic.

God has also given us the abilities and task to solve these probems. He has given us doctors to heal the sick, resources especially from rich countries like the U.S. to send food and clothing to the poor and hungry.

Don't blame God; he did not cause these things, we did. God wants his children to accept the consequences of our actions and to take responsibility for those consequences. What Father does not want this for his children, to raise them up as responsible adults?

In addition, God wants us to be a family. If we see our brother or sister in need, then we should help them. We are our brother's keepers. That is the Christian way of life.

If we all did what we are suppose to be doing, hunger and poverty would not exist. But, God cannot interfere with the free will of dictators, for example, who keep their people poor and hungry. With His grace and inspiration we are to try to influence people to do the right thing.

When people do not do the right thing, God does not abandon us. Rather, He promises that all things, good and bad, will work together for good. In other words, God can make lemonade out of the lemons of life.

And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28)

Since God does not lie, we know this is true and can count on it. The catch is that we have to allow God to make lemonade out of our lemons.

God allows these things in our life because it tests our faith and strengthens it unless we are too proud to accept the lesson, or too steeped into a self-pity party (which is a form of pride). God, therefore, did show your friend what to do, she just wasn't listening; pride got in her way.

To your question about curses, yes, if one believes they have a curse they should pray specific spiritual warfare prayers. We have a Catalog of Spiritual Warfare Prayers that can be useful to people.

We will be in prayer for your friend.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
