Question Title Posted By Question Date
Follow-up to Music for meditative prayer Jacob Tuesday, November 22, 2011

Question:

Dear Brother,

I just wanted to follow-up to Marie's recent question about chant and meditative prayer.. she mentioned "Enigma" and I just wanted to say that I happen to be a fan of that musical project, and that although their music contains a lot of samples of Gregorian chants as well as many other traditional music styles, the chants are not performed by the group itself and should NOT be used for prayer or meditation. Enigma is a New Age group and although the music certainly is very beautiful, it is not suitable for serious Christian prayer since it contains other non-Christian beliefs as well. Go with the real stuff that is recorded by monasteries instead. :-)

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), L.Th., D.D.

Dear Jacob:

Thanks for the information. I agree, the Gregorian Chant needs to be from the monks.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
