Music for meditative prayer-and | Marie | Monday, November 14, 2011 |
Question: Dear Brother Ignatius Mary, I ordered two Gregorian Chant CD's recorded by monks to use in meditative prayer. I have heard how beautiful the chant is, but I had no clue on how many choices are available. I am not familiar with the groups (Enigma?) that do the recordings nor do I have sound on my computer to listen to samplings. Since there are so many avenues of exposing yourself to something seemingly innocent, are there any recordings to stay away from? And are there any that you know of that are recommended? Also, can you give a brief description on what is meant by "New Age"? |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), L.Th., D.D.
Dear Marie: You are completely safe in buying Gregorian Chant sung by any monastery. What they are Chanting are the prayers of the Liturgy of the Hours (Divine Office). The New Age cannot be define briefly. The Wikipedia article is as good as any to describe the New Age. To learn about the New Age from a Christian point-of-view the book Unmasking the New Age and Confronting the New Age: How to Resist a Growing Religious Movement? both by Douglas Groothuis is recommended. Groothuis is a Protestant, but these books are good. We use them as textbooks for our students. God Bless, Footer Notes: This forum is for general questions on the faith.
