Question:

Recently, I was cast in a community theater play. I have just noticed that the author likes having the character I am to play use "Oh, my God," several times when the character is amazed or startled.

My question is whether this would be inappropriate to say? Would this be "using the Lord's name in vain?" And if I substituted, "my word," instead, wouldn't that be exactly the same?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), L.Th., D.D.

Dear Eric:

There is no sin for an actor to say blasphemous words that are written in a script. The intent of the actor is not to blaspheme God, but to play a part of a character who uses such language.

As far as the question of whether or not you wish to particiapte in a play that includes such language is up to your personal conscience to decide. There is no sin if you decide to participate.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
