False Judgments/ Illnesses are of satan? Marie Friday, November 4, 2011

Question:

Dear Brother Ignatius Mary,

A while back I came across a comment elsewhere of someone's Biblical interpretation that demonized people had mental health issues or other illnesses. They went on to say that God does not desire anyone to suffer illness, and all sickness and death stems from Satan.

This was disturbing to me. I have heard this outside of the Catholic faith as well. I have inherited physical conditions. Am I demonized?

I must say that my condition tests others Godliness to offer help, just go forward and help, turn away, laugh at not with me, or just watch me when I am in a pickle. At times throughout my life I was a target for those of diabolical intent too, even those in my faith. And what do those people do with the attitude expressed above? Judge us as demonized?

I also read that we do need to be judgmental. That it s wrong to let God be the judge. We are all human therefore are we not flawed to place judgment upon others?

Sincerely...Marie

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), L.Th., D.D.

Dear Marie:

Only goodness comes from God. Thus, all material evil (tornados, floods, illness, death) came from the Satan not because of himself, but because our parents, Adam and Eve, through their Original Sin, allowed Satan to enter human history and to bring with him material evil as well as moral evil as a consequence.

Weather disasters, illness, and death are called "material evil" because Satan is not directly involved, but these things are a result, a consequence, of Original Sin, which is the fault of Adam and Eve.

Reading from, A Catholic Dictionary (ed. Donald Attwater, Tan Books, p. 18o), material evil is defined as:

Those physical, mental, or social conditions, regarded in themselves and without reference to their possible origin in the personal sins of men, which are the cause of pain and suffering, e.g., Disease, poverty, unemployment, war.

What this means is that Satan is not the proximate or immediate cause of a tornado, flood, or illness. Rather, these events are a "consequence" of Original Sin. While demons can bring illness as seen in the Bible, most illness have nothing to do with demons directly.

If illness meant that we are demonized, we would all be demonized because all people fall sick at times. Sickness is the consequence of Original Sin, that is all.

No, you are not demonized because of your afflictions.

As for judgment, we are to make proper judgments. If a man comes to your door and points a gun to your head, you will judge that he is a criminal wanting to do evil. This is a correct judgment.

We are to judge behavior and ideas. We are not to judge a person's heart and state of soul, nor our we to judge hypocritically or with a double-standard. We cannot judge a person to hell, but we can say that the person's behavior places his soul "on the road tohell" unless he repent.

There is an entire essay on this subject, Three Secret Strategies of Satan, that explains the details on this.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
