Dear John. No worries. One clarification. I do not think the secret rituals or ceremonies or activities are formally "approved". Rather, it is the bishop's responsibility to review these ceremonies to ensure they are consistent with Catholic teaching. As far as I know the bishop does not grant a formal imprimatur. He has a general oversight over all Catholic apostolates and organizations in his diocese. This is the difference between Catholic groups who hold secrets and groups like the Masons or some Greek Fraternities, especially Kappa Sigma Fraternity, which has been exempt from the Congressional inquiries on Greek Fraternities (see this Q&A for more detail). Kappa Sigma and the Masons, as an example, are accountable to no one. Fraternities associated with the Catholic Church are accountable to the bishop.
