Question:

As a Christ Renews His Parish graduate and having seen what spiritual goods have come from it in our parish, I thought I would try to alay some of the concerns about CRHP "secrets" and copyrights.

The program, with accompanying team manuals, is copyrighted - probably similar to TEC (Teens Encounter Christ and Cursillo). The program was copyrighted first in 1978. The current copyright holder, since 1996, is the Community of the Holy Spirit. What the authors are trying to prevent is the watering down or non-effective modifications of the content or flow of the program. They want to avoid people calling a program CRHP which bears little resemblence to the original.

I might add that it takes weeks of preparation for the CHRP team to prepare for the weekend. To maintain consistency in the process it is taught to a parish team by an "outreach" team from another parish that has succefully inplements CHRP in their parish.

As for the "secrets" that is simply a way of saying, "Don't tell them the ending of the movie." There are exercises that if one knew what was coming it would eliminate the impact of the experience. There are no secret "handshakes" or code words or rituals. It is very orthodox and by following the process that orthodoxy is maintained, as opposed to letting team members "do their own thing." Like we say in the TEC program with HS juniors and seniors, "Participate, don't anticipate."

Once implemented in the parish, a Continuation Committee is formed to assist other teams to carry in the process in the parish. Participants in the CHRP weekend form the next team to take the process further in their parish and ONLY in their parish. The program is for members of a specific parish, not open to the general public. It's to renew the parish, not a general retreat. There is a men's CHRP and women's CRHP. The Continuation Committee is made up of both men and women "graduates."

The spiritual advisor for the Continuation Committee is ideally a priest or deacon from the parish. When that's not possible the team elects an advisor from the committee.

My wife and I have gone through the program and have served on the Continuation Committee. It's been a blessing for our parish.

Sorry, I can't tell you the "secrets."

Hope this helps.

Question Answered by

Dear Deacon:

Thanks for the information. I am sure CHRP is a fine organization. The issue of the "secret" is merely my own idiosyncrasy. The same about the copyright issue.

As soon as the material is placed in a bound form of some kind it is automatically copyrighted even if the copyright is not registered. One can make the announcement of copyright, and should make the announcement, on the material itself. I just find it odd to make such a big deal of the material being copyrighted with every reference on the website. Since the material is not online, a simple statement of copyright on the physical material is all that is needed. From my own experience, there tends to be other problems when people are so paranoid about copyright. But, this is something that is my own idiosyncrasy.

But, to make it clear about the organization itself, I did not find anything problematic on their website. The statements I have found from people who've been through the program are all positive. Thus, barring some new piece of information that is negative the program seems to be a good one.

There is no question that we need to help people to revitalize their faith and to inspire them to both share their faith and practice their faith in their families, in their parishes, and in the world.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
