RE: Considering becoming Catholic Crystal Thursday, September 1, 2011

Question:

Dear Brother,

Thank you for your response. I would like some further information regarding Masses. If a person cannot attend a Saturday or Sunday Mass, can they attend a weekday service? As when my cousin was alive (deceased 2 years now), I remember he attended weekday Morning Mass but did not attend Saturday or Sunday Mass; however did attend Holy and Holiday services.

Also, until I become baptized into the Catholic faith, can I still pray to a Saint for intercession, as well as for their guidance, peace, and love?

I am looking into Catholic churches to find a spiritual home and for fellowship with others, as well as reading books about the Catholic faith.

Once again, thank you for your response as it has been a great help.

God Bless,
Crystal

Question Answered by

Dear Crystal:

The Catholic Church offers Mass every single day. If you wish to attend Mass daily you may certainly do so. You may not miss Sunday Mass without just cause. For example, if you must work a schedule whereby you can never attend the Saturday Vvigil Mass, or the Sunday morning Mass, as long you have that job, then you should ask your priest for a dispensation to attend one of the daily masses each week; such as on your day off. Whatever day that may be will serve, in essence, as your Sunday.

I do not know what the circumstances were with your cousin. Perhaps he had transporation during the week, but not on the weekends. I do not know. But, except for situations like lack of transportation or the the example I just gave about work, and other similar justified reasons, one cannot substitute the Sunday liturgy for a Daily Mass. Daily Masses are optional. Sunday Mass is required of all Catholics upon pain of sin, and lest there is a justified reason to miss the Sunday Liturgy. In addition, Catholics are required to attend Mass on all Holy Days of Obligation, and lest there is a justified reason why they can't.

As for yourself we again thank God for your interest in converting to the Catholic Church. You may practice all the devotions to saints, prayers, and liturgies of the Church even though you have not been received into the Church as yet. The only thing that you may not do is receive the Sacraments.

Thus, when you attend Mass you need to remain in your pew when others go forward to receive the Eucharist. I know that in many parishes it has become a custom for non-Catholics, or for Catholics who are not properly disposed to receive the Eucharist, to go forward with everyone else in order to receive a blessing since they cannot receive the Eucharist. Do not do that even of others do. The Church disapproves of that practice. Thus, in obedience to the Church you need to remain in your pew until such time as you are baptized and confirmed in the Church.

I would encourage you to find a parish quickly as the classes that will prepare you for baptism are already starting, or will soon start.

We will be praying for you as you begin this conversion process and will continually praise and thank God for you.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
