First Five Saturday Devotion Mary Jo Monday, July 25, 2011

Question:

In order to properly fulfill all the conditions of this devotion is it permissible to attend the Sunday Vigil Mass or must it be the regular Saturday morning Mass. I understand that Our Lord told Sr. Lucia that if one cannot attend Mass on Saturday He permitted the transfer of this condition to Sunday. This got me wondering because in the past whenever I practiced this devotion I attended the Vigil Mass even though technically there were times I could have attended that Saturday morning Mass.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r)

Dear Mary Jo:

The Blessed Virgin Mary gave this message to Lucia at Fatima in 1917:

"Jesus wants to use you to make me known and loved. He wants to establish the devotion to my Immaculate Heart in the world. I promise salvation to those who embrace it and their souls will be loved by God as flowers placed by myself to adorn His throne."

"I promise to assist at the hour of death with all the graces necessary for salvation all those who, on the First Saturday of five consecutive months, confess, receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the Rosary, and keep me company for fifteen minutes meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary, with the intention of making reparation to me."

Our Lady does not mention when on Saturday we are to receive Holy Communion. While the Vigil Mass is the Sunday Liturgy, it is still said on Saturday.

In any event, this is a private devotion. As such, it is not regulated by the Church. In any private devotion, such as the Rosary, Divine Mercy, or this one, a person can modify it as he chooses. There is no sin. Only prayers and devotions regulated by the Church must be done precisely.

What these private devotions do is to guide us into devotion to our Lady, to our Lord, to the Sacred Heart, etc. They are "guides", not laws that must be obeyed precisely or one will get a ticket by the "devotion police". Wink We need to avoid scrupulosity.

Our Lady, and our Lord, know your heart. Follow your conscience.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
