Question:

Brother, what exactly did Jesus mean chronologically when he said he would be with us until the end of time? I understand he's talking about the end of the world, but is this also a kind of metaphor for eternity? But if it is a metaphor for eternity, the word "end" seems strange.

My main conundrum here is, if He's "with us" until the end of time, and it indeed implies also the afterlife, how does it remain consistent with eternal life being eternal? And if it only means until the end of the age, why does He say this?

Wouldn't He be with us until the end of the age, and even more so after the end of the age, since we (meaning whoever makes it to heaven) would be spending eternity with Him in person after the Resurrection?

I know this is all a contextual issue, so I'm just looking for a clear-up.

Dear Ryan:

The passage is in Matthew 28:18-20, the Great Commission:

And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age."

The "close of the age" is referring the Church Age. Jesus will be with his Church until the end (of the age, of the world, of time). The Church age ends at the Second Coming when this world will pass away.

This does not imply that Jesus will not be with us in heaven, He is saying He will be with the Church until the end of time.

We have understand what the word "until" means. Protestants go through all sort of grammatical gibberish to try to refute the Catholic view on Mary's perpetual virginity because Matthew 1:24-25 says,

When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took his wife, but knew her not until she had borne a son; and he called his name Jesus.

This does not mean that Joseph had relations with Mary after Jesus was born. The conjunction "until" in Scriptural usage expresses what has occurred up to a certain point, and leaves the future aside. For example, 2 Samuel 6:23 states, "Michal the daughter of Saul had not children until the day of her death.” Does this mean that Michal had children after her death? Deuteronomy 34:6 says that no one knew the location of the grave site of Moses "until this present day". We still do not know the where the grave site is at.

When Jesus returns the world will end, time ends. He will be with His Church to the end. After the end of the world, the earth and the Church cease, but Jesus takes his bride to heaven where He remains with us forever; there is no end.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
