Need help with a young friend who left the CC Chas Thursday, June 16, 2011

Question:

I have a young friend who has stopped going to Mass on Sundays. He goes on occasion with his family but does not receive communion. He is doing a lot of work for a small non-Catholic Church where he goes around picking up kids in a bus and drives them to that church for bible studies. He lives in an affluent part of town but wants to move to a poorer neighborhood where he can minister to others and feels that he has been led to spread the Word of God.

He does lots of ministry work and even encounters many Catholics helping out poor people. He said he prayed and prayed and read scripture and he personally feels the God placed him in the position he is in now. He assists the pastor of that church with the poor. He said THAT is what he feels the Holy Spirit has guided him to do. I told him that the Holy Spirit would NOT guide him away from the CC. He feels the Church today has many incorrect teachings even though he could not give me a single one that contradicts Scripture which he claims it does. He now prays ONLY to Jesus because He is the only intercessor (I tried to explain about praying to saints and our Mother but he didn’t understand). I know that he is doing a lot of good where he is especially since he says he has taken a vow of chastity and said he has become a eunuch for the Lord.

I quoted Matt 18:17 and Luke 10:16. I explained what “no salvation outside of the Church” means and that he was putting himself in danger but he said he didn’t believe me. I told him that he didn’t have to believe ME but to believe the Church. He said he didn’t believe in that. I told him that HIS belief means diddly-squat. The truth can’t be changed.

He said he goes to communion in his church but I explained that he is just receiving bread and grape juice and not the body and blood of Jesus. He believes the Church has erred in her teachings and I countered then if that is his belief then Jesus failed. As usual when trying to discuss with Protestants, they like to jump around when trapped.

I have been praying for him for several years to come back to the CC. I know his heart is in the right place as far as his love for the Lord. Are there any sites or books that I can show him that he needs to come back to the CC?

Oh, by the way, he dated two non-Catholic girls previously and would go to their services and I told him that he probably was influenced by anti-Catholic messages but he said no that he actually learned all by himself by reading scripture.

Thanks and God bless you.

Dear Chas:

I am sorry to hear about this fellow abandoning the Church. At least he is honest to not receive communion when he does attend Mass with family.

It sounds like you have done all you can do. The rest is up to the Lord. Keep praying for him.

For some additional resources, Catholic Answers has some pamphlets that answer some of the objections presented by Protestants. Then there is Biblical Evidence for Catholicism, and Scripture Catholic.

Scripture Catholic: Providing Scriputual Evidence for Catholicism

One proviso on this last reference. The author of Scripture Catholic has gone over the bridge on the subject of Geocentrism (the belief that the Sun and Stars rotate around the earth). This is not Catholic teaching. His views on Evolution are not totally in line with Catholic teaching either, though is okay. He take a literalist view on both Geocentrism and Evolution, which the Church does not do. His views sometimes seem to be at odds with the Church on issues such as Fatima, and other issues. Keep to the scripture references that support Catholic teachings.

Actually, when I have the time, I think I need to provide a similar website for scriptures references since John Salza is teetering over a cliff these days on some issues like Fatima, what seems a bent toward the Ultra-Traditionalist view, and especially on geocentricism.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
