What to do with junk mail Charles Saturday, September 18, 2004

Question:

I daily receive countless junk mail (as every American does). However, what am I do to with all these medals, religious cards, water from Lourdes, pennies, nickels, etc that I get?

They all ask for donations. I regret that I am not able to donate to all of them as due to limited income. I was told some time ago by a priest that I do not keep them but that I can even discard them in the trash.

I feel bad about using the cards if I do not donate and I do not want to continually bury the medals in the back yard. I can't keep the medals as I would just have tons of them in a drawer. I dont give them as gifts as they are not what you would call good quality. What is the best way to discard them?

Thank you and God Bless.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM+

Dear Charles:

These items are sent unsolicited and with no certain expectation of donation. Thus there is no moral problem in keeping the items.

In terms of discarding the items, any blessed object, if indeed these things are blessed, must be discarded properly. This is accomplished by burning the item, if it is burnable, or otherwise destroying the object so that it no longer resembles what it was. Then one can bury the remains in the ground, for example.

However, I have another alternative for you and for all our readers. These sorts of items can be very useful to us here at the Legion of St. Michael. We would be most happy to accept these items as a donation to us. We can find uses for them.

This also applies to books and things written by heretics, satanists, occultists, etc. Such books are useful for apologetics research.

So, to everyone, you want to throw away a book? Donate it to us instead. You want to get rid of all these medals and things that come in the mail? Donate them to us. We will sure appreciate it and we can promise that all such materials will be put to good use to glorify God.

Our address is:

Legion of St. Michael
P.O. Box 184
307 N. Richmond St.
Roscoe, SD 57471

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
