Dear Glenn: Technically, as long as the Altar Bread (wafer) is not consecrated it is not a grave sin to eat it per se. The question is why would you want to do this? If you wish to eat a cookie or a cracker then buy some at the grocery. While this may not be a sin against the Eucharist, I find it disturbing. Altar bread is made for a specific purpose and you are not using it for that purpose. To me, this is similar to using a St. Benedict medal that has not be blessed to stabilize a wobbly table. Since the medal is not blessed I suppose that one could use it to place under the table leg, but this would be very odd at best. Even though it is not blessed, it is a still a religious item that is being misused and thereby it is disrespectful at the least, and perhaps a venial sin. I think you need to stop this practice. You have no business buying Altar Bread for your personal purposes. There is no reason under the sun for you do do this. If you have some kind of fetish, or psychological compulsion to do this, then please see a mental health professional about it. But, I would advise you to stop.
