crucifix/cross | Claire | Saturday, September 18, 2004 |
Question: Hello Br. Ignatius, First I want to thank you for answering my question re: K of C. It certainly helped to clarify matters and I feel MUCH better about this wonderful organization. Now for my question: When did Christians first start using the crucifix as a symbol of our faith? Was the crucifix or the cross first worn? I understand that only Catholics wear the crucifix - is that correct? Thank you so much and God bless you, from Claire |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM+
Dear Claire: The cross is a symbol that predates Christianity. The cross was rather quickly adapted as a Christian symbol at least by the 3rd century I think. The use of the crucifix as a regular fixture during Mass was not until the 15th century I think. No sure of the dates on these things. Here are a few articles that may be of interest: The Cross and Crucifix in Liturgy Archæology of the Cross and Crucifix Catholic and Eastern Orthodox, and a few psuedo-Catholic schismatic groups, are the ones most likely to wear a crucifix, but there are some Protestants who wear them too. God Bless,
