not confessing details | George | Saturday, January 22, 2011 |
Question: i committed a really weird sin and i did not know how to confess it, when i was in the line for confession i decided to confess it as "using my body in an unholy way" and that seemed fine but when i confessed it the priest kept asking me for more details and i did not know how i could explain it too him he sort of tired to help me out but it was very weird for me. is this something that has to be re confessed again? |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r)
Dear George: If the priest asks for details, then you give him details. There is no such thing as "did not know how i could explain it too him". You just tell him what you did. If the priest asks for details and you said whatever you said to answer him, and he accepted that and gave you absolution, then I do not believe you need to re-confess the sin. If there are any doubts, ask your confessor. Next time do not hesitate. If the priest asks for further details, then give him the details. Do not allow pride, embarrassment, shame, weirdness, or whatever get in the way. God knows what you have done, He is just waiting for you to confess it with your mouth, which is a true sign of acknowledging and accepting responsibility for your sin. When we keep silent and do not speak the sin, it is too easy to gloss over it. That is one of the many reasons for the doctrine on the Sacrament of Confession (and in the Protestant and secular world for what they call an "accountability partner").
