Isaiah 22:25 Diego Sunday, December 26, 2010

Question:

In reading Isaiah 22: 21-23 I understanding how we believe Jesus made Peter the first pope especially verse 21 where it says "...and he shall be as a father (papa or now Pope) to the inhabitants of Jerusalem,...). And verse 23 "And I will fasten him as a peg in a sure place, and he shall be for a throne of glory to the house of his father."

However, I'm a little confused by verse 25 (please pardon my ignorance of scripture) where it says, "In that day, saith the Lord of hosts, shall the peg be removed, that was fastened in the sure place: and it shall be broken and shall fall: and that which hung thereon, shall perish, because the Lord hath spoken it." To me it seems to indicate that the office or title of "Pope" will be done away with. (I'm sure I'm not understanding this correctly.)

Also in that same chapter is uses several times "in that day" or "On that day". I know its all tied together but would you be so kind as to clarify verse 25 for me and also what "On that day" means.

Thanks and God Bless You and hoping you have a great Christmas season and a prosperous New Year.

Diego...

Dear Diego:

Verses 15-25 is referring to the Oracle of Shebna. (An Oracle is a revelation from God.)

Shebna was the current Prime minister whom God was firing and replacing with Eliakim (verses 20-24). The "peg that is fastened in a sure place" in verse 23 refers to Eliakim. The peg that falls (verse 25) is Shebna, who is being fired. "In the day" refers to the day the transfer of power from Shebna to Eliakim takes place.

This images what was taking place in Matthew 16. Jesus was "firing" the papacy of Moses (the Chair of Moses) and replacing that line of succession with the papacy of Peter (Chair of Peter) establishing a new line of succession. Since each Covenant has its own Prime Ministry (papacy), the old must fall away for the new to be established.

The Peg that fell away is the Peg of the Mosaic covenant and the Chair of Moses. The Peg that now exists, and will exist until the Second Coming, is the Peg of the New Covenant of Jesus Christ and the Chair of Peter.

Thus, "In the day" in this context is the Passion of Christ on the Cross when veil in the Temple was ripped in two signifying that the Old Covenant has fallen away and a New Covenant begging, and the Day of Pentecost when the Church was born and Peter took his place as Prime Minister.

This is why it is absolutely clear, without any shadow of a doubt to the minds of the disciples at the time, nor to us today who have the courage to read and trust Scripture without bias, that Jesus was establishing a New Covenant with a new Chair of Authority, a new prime minister, a new Pope. Praise God!

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
