Acta SS., Aug., V, 119 | Chas | Friday, December 3, 2010 |
Question: I am trying to help my nephew in regards to finding some history regarding St. Genesius. I find references to Acta SS., Aug., V, 119 in several places but trying to cite quotations I would like to see if you can help that this means. Is it a series of books, or a dictionary? How is the above interpreted? |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r)
Dear Chas: I believe Acta SS., Aug., V, 119 refers to the Acta Sanctorum which is a sixty-eight volume work by the Societé des Bollandistes in Antwerp and Brussels. It is a collection of documents examining the lives of saints, organised according to each saint's feast day, and runs from the two January volumes published in 1643 to the Propylaeum to December published in 1940. Acta SS., Aug., V, 119 therefore probably means: Acta Sanctorum, August, probably volume 5, but maybe section 5, page 119 These 68 volumes are online, but for a hefty price, at Acta Sanctorum Database.
