Priests obedience to his Bishop Chas Monday, October 4, 2010

Question:

Does a priest have a right to make a deal with his Bishop? I have heard that a priest who came from a different diocese and was assigned to work in the Chancery of the new diocese made a deal with the Bishop. It's this: There were going to be some changes and new assignments in different parishes and my understanding that this particular priest wanted to be assigned to a certain Parish that he liked. However, the Bishop wanted him at a different parish. The priest said he would go where the Bishop wanted to assign him on the condition that the Diocese redo the whole rectory, remodel the kitchen with new counters, new lighting throughout, new floors throughout, new paint jobs throughout, remodel a small room and turn it into an additional bedroom that there are now four bedrooms which the priest uses for his relatives who come and stay weeks at a time.

Also one of the main bedrooms is for his mother who I understand goes with him wherever he is assigned to.

I thought that the priests were to go wherever the Bishop decided was best without complaining. My understanding too is that money at the diocese was tight and some employees had to be released, however, to please this priest and go where the Bishop wanted him to go, the diocese came up with some $15+ grand to please the priest.

Can a priest work out deals with the Bishop? This is a bishop who I heard was pretty strong and upset some people when he was newly assigned to the Diocese because he wanted things done to the letter where the previous Bishop would let a bunch of feminist nuns run everything.

Thanks for your comments and God Bless

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r)

Dear Chas:

These are not doctrinal matters. Such things are between a priest and his Bishop. It is none of our business. The Bishop has the authority directly from God to run his diocese the way he sees fit as long as there is no breach of doctrine or communion with the Pope.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
