Question: Can a Catholic, in good conscience, cast their vote for a political candidate who is openly involved (or, was openly involved in the past) in an occult group? |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r)
Dear Joe: If the occult involvement of the Candidate was in the past, then I see no problem voting for him, assuming all other issues are in line with Catholic teaching. After all, if Catholics could not vote for sinners, then we could not vote for anyone! Thus, if the Candidate has sought forgiveness for his sin and has renounced his occult activity, then we have no right to hold this past sin against him. This is true for any sin. On the other hand, if a Candidate is currently and openly practicing the occult, and this can be proven, then I think it would not be prudent to vote for such a person, just as it would not be prudent to vote for anyone who is actively committing crimes. Involvement in the occult is a crime. Historically, the Church has called serious sin "crimes", and they are crimes against God's law which trumps man's law.
