Charismatic Healing? Logan Saturday, September 18, 2010

Question:

Brother,

I've recently heard from my friend who attends an Assemblies of God church to help with the youth group; that their prayer services can be quite charismatic. Recently such a prayer service occurred and my friend says that the parishioners, whom most are teens, were warned that some people might start wailing during the service. One such girl started to wail next to my friend. The girl shortly afterwards started to vomit. My friend kept her eyes closed as to not make herself sick; when she opened her eyes she saw that the girl was vomiting blood and would not stop. The youth leaders began to pray over her, but she didn't stop until a good while. They claimed that this was an evil spirit or a sign of letting go of something bad in this girls life, as they had prayed for people who had been victims of sexual abuse.

Sorry, for the length. I'm just concerned; as a Catholic, does this sound kosher to you? Is this a fruit of the Holy Spirit? I'm not really sure what to make of it.

Thank You and God Bless.

Dear Logan:

The Assemblies of God and other charismatic groups, including many Catholic charismatics, are often very sloppy about their theology on demonology and sometimes dangerous in their practices of deliverance. The prayer service you describe I would place in the category of irresponsible and dangerous.

That said, as far as the symptom of vomiting or other release of sputum as a expulsion of demons, does happen sometimes. This is particularly possible in the case of a person who has ingested a hex (a cursed object or substance). Exorcists have reported that demonized people have been known to vomit up very odd objects.

One other aspect that cannot be overlook is the psychogenic effect. This is especially problematic in assemblies, such as the prayer services like you describe. The human mind is very susceptible to suggestion. In the instance you report the ministers apparently warned people in advance of what might happen. Given the culture of Pentecostals, the pre-service suggestion, and the human propensity to be influenced (psyched out) by a rousing preacher and to behave according to suggestion, as well to peer pressure, I am not surprised that such things occurred at this prayer service. In psychology this is called "self-fulfilling prophecy" (we think something is going to happen, or might happen, and it does happen because our subconscious makes it happen).

It is more likely that this girl who would not stop vomiting was acting from these dynamics described (albeit subconsciously). In addition, if she was vomiting blood and not stopping, she should have been taken to the emergency room. Who knows what the cause of this might have been. The excitement, emotion, and stress of the meeting might have caused blood vessels to break, an ulcer to rupture, or who knows. If the ministers did not take her to the emergency room we have very serious problems on their part with a failure of prudence, ethics, and due diligence to care for the girl. If she had died, someone would be held responsible for one level or another of homicide.

The bottomline answer to your question is that it is possible a demon may be expelled through vomiting, but the prolonged nature of this girls vomiting and the blood suggests something else happening.

The Pentecostal prayer services of this type, in my view, are a form of religious abuse, dangerous to all present, and ultimately and oddly enough, serves the devils purposes to detract people away from legitimate and God glorifying deliverance. That is not to say that some people may not be liberated at such services. God is loving and merciful and will act in accord with a person's faith and His will. Thus, He can heal someone even if, and despite whether or not the ministers running the service are numskulls.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
