Dear Suzanne: There is no need for a book really. The altar is where the sacrifice of the Mass takes place. The priest has to have some sort of "table" to put the elements of the Eucharist upon. This is liken to a kitchen counter. I am sure the child's mother, or grandmother, doesn't fix supper on the floor. I think that analogy she will understand.
