Guidance regarding old sins | John | Thursday, September 9, 2010 |
Question: Dear Bro. Ignatius, When I was anywhere between 14-17, I began to struggle with internet pornography. During this time I, for the most part, restricted my activity to looking up pictures on "Google image search” with the filter turned off. This search engine only produced thumbnail images containing explicit content. I had many problems at this time, and searched for things I am too ashamed to mention here. In my searches, I remember coming across some thumbnail pictures which probably contained illegal content (i.e. underage people). This was unsolicited and accidental. At the time I was, of course, repelled and disturbed by the images, and moved on. The thought of reporting them did not even cross my mind. I can’t entirely trust my memory, but I think this must have happened several times throughout my teen years. I was not searching for this appalling material. I was never my intention to find them, or to do anything illegal. I thought a search engine such as this should be relatively “safe” from that. I am disgusted with myself for having come across it, and feel like a criminal. The guilt is oppressing. All of this happened at least four years ago. I am now wondering what God wants me to do about it. What can I do? Did I commit crimes? Does God want me to take steps to rectify this, or simply to repent of having looked at pornography and move on? I’m not yet a Catholic (hoping by God’s grace to enter the Church this Easter), but feel the need to confess this now. I would be so grateful for any light you can shed on this distressing situation. God bless you. |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r)
Dear John: As for reporting the child pornography, I do not think that is needed as the FBI has a very active task force and knows about most all sources of this material. I believe you when you say that this was unintentional. The problem is that it does not matter that you did not intend to come across the child pornography. Legal principle includes the concept of mens rea (criminal intent). That means that a prosecutor needs to prove a person had the "intent" to commit the crime. Legislatures, however, when writing laws, may suspend mens rea for certain crimes. Child Pornography is one of those crimes that mens rea has been suspended. As mentioned, when you delete a file, it is not actually deleted and police computer forensics can recover most of the deleted material. Thus, you need to clean your computer so that no deleted file can be recovered. 1. Never access a pornography site again Bottomline: Avoid Internet pornography at all costs. By the way: Every single time anyone goes to a website, their IP address is recorded by the system (the webmaster doesn't have to do anything, it is automatic). With a court order, the police can use that IP address to track you down. And if a person buys a membership in any porno site, that information is readily and easily available to police. Let this be a lesson to you. We will pray that you will not indulge in pornography again. And we also pray that all will go well during RCIA and you will enter next Easter the Catholic Church, the Church that Jesus personally founded. Praise God!
