Should I have kept quiet | Chas | Saturday, August 28, 2010 |
Question: In our family we still observe meatless Fridays as a form of penance. My wife and I at times will go to a cafeteria for dinner and have a fish plate on Fridays. I was placing my order with my wife ahead of me and she had already selected her side orders. She loves green beans but she failed to notice that there was bacon in them. After we sat down at the table I noticed them and told her to make sure not eat the bacon. She said that I should not have mentioned it. Should I have kept quiet? |

Dear Chas: I praise God that your family maintains this tradition of the universal Church to abstain from meat on all Fridays of the year (unless a Solemnity falls on a Friday). This is still the norm for the universal Church. The wimpy immaturity of the United States as exempted this tradition outside of Lent. If this is your tradition, I fail to see how mentioning this to your wife is wrong, depending on how you spoke to her. We all can forget or otherwise find ourselves eating meat before we realize that it is Friday. If you mentioned with light-heartedly, and not condemningly, then I do not know why your wife would object. Could it be pride in now wanting to be confronted with a mistake? Or is something else going on? I don't know. But, there is nothing wrong with mentioning the oversight as long as the mention is light-hearted and loving.
