Question: Since Catholics believe Mother Mary was without sin, couldn't she have died on the cross for the "salvation of the world"? |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Ian: Our blessed Mother was indeed sinless by the singular grace God granted her in the Immaculate Conception. She could not, however, taken her son's place on the Cross as she was and is not God. In order for man to be redeemed the person who paid the penalty on the cross not only had to be sinless, but he had to have the ability to raise Himself from the dead by His own power. Mary could not have done that; only God can do that. Our redemption does not come solely from Christ's death on the Cross to pay for sin. Our redemption becomes complete when Christ defeated death and rose again. Only upon the penalty of sin paid and the defeat of death can we hope to live forever. God Bless,
