Question: If a Catholic girl marries a Hindu convert to Catholicism, will she be committing adultery, if the man while a Hindu had divorced his wife and has a child out of that marriage? |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Leon: I presume this marriage will be in the Church. In fact, it must be in the Church to be valid. Thus, the pastor and the diocese, I am sure, know about the previous Hindu marriage and have removed any impediments in preparation of the Catholic wedding. These issues get very technical and I am not a canon lawyer, but as far as I know, nothing has to be done since the man converted to Catholicism as he is now baptized and confirmed Catholic and his previous marriage (Hindu marriage I presume) was not Sacramental. (A Sacramental marriage must be between a baptized man and a baptized woman.) If there were any paperwork to be done to remove any impediments the diocese will do that before a Catholic marriage takes place. Even if the pastor marries them without the diocese knowing the circumstances, the diocese eventually reviews all such Sacraments as baptisms and marriages to ensure all proper paperwork is accomplished. If the paperwork is not in order the diocese will make sure any discrepancies are corrected. God Bless, Footer Notes: This forum is for general questions on the faith.
