Question: I am a 35 year old married female with endometriosis. We have one child in heaven due to an ectopic pregnacy last year. We have been trying to conceive since our marriage in 2004. My doctor says that our best option is to have another laparoscopy with immediate treatment of lupron for six months to shrink the endo. She says that this would give us the best chance to remove the endo from obstructing a chance for pregnancy, at least temporarily as it would take time for it to grow back. Is this treatment morally licit as Catholics? If so, is NFP during this time (we are trained in it) acceptable or is abstinence during treatment neccessary? We will follow the Church's teaching but we have gotten several different answers to this. Any response would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and God Bless! |

Dear Christine: I praise God that you desire to stay close to the Church on this. I wish more couples would. From what I understand about lupron, I can see no problem in the treatment. The issue is that a woman should not get pregnant while on a luprons treatment. Doctors will suggest birth control, which of course, is not morally acceptable. Thus, you have two choices: 1) NFP (which is just as effective as any artificial birth control); or 2) abstinence. Many Catholics do not know that even NFP is not morally acceptable if it is done for mere birth control reasons. There has to be a serious reason to use NFP. Your situation qualifies as a serious reason. Thus, NFP is an option for you. Which you do is up to your husband and yourself; either choice is fine. We will be in prayer for you, and your husband.
