Where is the guardian Angel | Martin | Wednesday, June 30, 2010 |
Question: I know that we all have a guardian angel that has been assigned to us by God since the moment of our birth and will be with us till we die. I know that my guardian angel has protected me in many, many, countless situations. I have a question that I probably know the answer but would like to hear yours. In a situation where there is a heinous crime, say a woman is gang raped, or a man is bludgeoning his family members, etc., where are the (the victims, and aggressors) guardian angels at that instant. Are they to one side extremely sad? Have they left us at that moment? Do the angels of the victim and aggressor talk to one another? Are they praying to God at that moment? And are the evil angels mocking and laughing at what is going on? I know probably some saint has had a theological answer to this. |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Martin: Our Guardian Angels are with us all the time. There is never time that they leave us alone. Our Guardian Angels are often saddened when they see us sin, and they are watching us as we sin. Guardian Angels are saddened and consumed with compassion when their charge is being raped or murdered and such. I imagine they are in fervent prayer for their charge, and holding our hand. There has been more than one story of a little girl getting raped in which the little girl reported that there was man all in white holding her hand and comforting her. God will not, and Angels cannot, intrude upon free will, even the free will of the perpetrator. God has infinite compassion to heal the wounds of victims, both physical and spiritual. The souls of those victims who are murdered are in the hands of their Creator. On the topic of Guardian Angels taking to one another, the answer is yes. We can ask our Guardian Angel to talk to the Guardian Angel of the perpetrator to see if there is a way to persuade the perpetrator to stop what he is, or will be doing. But, remember, Guardian Angels can only try to persuade, they cannot force the perpetrator to stop, they cannot violate free will. With that said, God and His Angels can be mighty persuaders, but it all comes down to whether or not the perpetrator listens to that persuasion. I recommend two books from Peter Kreeft relating what Thomas Aquinas said about these subjects: Angels and Demons and Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Heaven, but Never Dreamed of Asking. Then there is another book of interest by Peter Kreeft: Making Sense out of Suffering. Father Groeschel has a couple of books of interest on the issue of suffering and life: Arise from Darkness: What to Do When Life Doesn't Make Sense There are No Accidents: In All Things Trust in God God Bless,
