Examination of Conscience - imperfections Rosa Friday, September 10, 2004

Question:

I noticed that on most examination of consciences excessive watching of television, excessive playing of computer games, and excessive use of the internet is usually listed under "You shall not kill" as venial sins/imperfections. Why there? I could understand them under the 1st commandment, as they can easily become gods in ones life, but I don't get the killing part. I just noticed lack of puncuality under the 5th commandment as a venial sin/imperfection too, why?

What actually is an imperfection, and why should we confess them?

Thanks for having so much patience with all my questions over the past few months. ^_^

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM+

Dear Rosa:

I do not think "most" examination of consciences include these things under the Fifth Commandment. I have never seen this on any Examination of Conscience that I have come across.

As to why this may be included with examination under the Fifth Commandment I can only guess. Maybe it is because addictive behavior tends to kill the soul; it can keep one from the proper nourishment of the soul that comes from prayer and the Sacraments due to the time spent on computer games and the Interent.

It can also kill relationships with family and friends in the sense of neglecting them in favor of the computer game or Internet.

I have no idea why punctuality is included; killing trust in other? I don't know.

You may want to write to the author of this Examination of Conscience and ask.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
