Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Jim: In my opinion, although we are referring to a novel of Hubbard's, there is absolutely no way you should take this job. To work on this book will be contributing to the empire of Hubbard's cult. L. Ron Hubbard is the founder of the cult the Church of Scientology. This is a very dangerous cult. Hubbard was a pervert having teenage girls dress him and essentially become his slaves1, was fraudulent, drug addict2, and most likely was mentally ill. He also was an admirer of the father of 20th Century Satanism Aleister Crowley and practiced sex magic.3 Hubbard, his wife, and followers had many run-ins with the law among which include 1) his wife convicted in 1979 of conspiracy against the United States. Hubbard was named by federal prosecutors as an "unindicted co-conspirator"4; 2) under investigation by IRS for embezzlement from his own "church"5; 3) was convicted of making fraudulent promises in France and sentence to four years in prison6; 4) in 1965 an Australian board of inquiry stated that Hubbard falsely claimed scientific and other credentials and his sanity was "to be gravely doubted".6 The man died of a stoke in 1986, but Scientology official said that Hubbard "had made a conscious decision to 'sever all ties' to this world so he could continue his Scientology research in spirit form...and was off to the next phase of his spiritual exploration -- 'on a planet a galaxy away.'"7 I would advise against it. God Bless,
