Question Title Posted By Question Date
Benedict XVI and Infant Baptism James Thursday, April 29, 2010

Question:

Have you heard about this going around that Pope Benedict XVI does not think that Infant Baptism is necessary. This is being spread by a group call the Most Holy Family Monastery and by what I gather they are sedevancantist which naturally raises a red flag. But what did the Pope actually say?

How would I answer this?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear James:

The Most Holy Family Monastery cannot be trusted to give the time of day, let alone anything accurate about what the Pope said or didn't say. Bro. Dimond and his band merry idiots are not only schismatics and heretics with all the arrogance that goes along with that, but sedevacantist, which is the height of arrogance, demonic arrogance. I truly believe people like this are mentally ill. For one thing they suffer from a severe form of obsessive-compulsive disorder (scrupulosity), but their behavior goes way beyond that. These people not only have the arrogance to rival Satan himself, but have the mentality of UFO conspiracy nuts.

You should not be frequenting their website. It will only confuse you and provide an occasion for scandal.

In the typical fashion of cowards, the Dimond's merry idiots quote only part of the passage, and then misinterpret it to twist the words in a way that only the spirit of devil can achieve, to present a straw man to accuse the Pope. It is pathetic.

In their article that attempt to quote the Pope (emphasis theirs):

Benedict XVI, Principles of Catholic Theology, 1982, p. 43: “The conflict over infant baptism shows the extent to which we have lost sight of the true nature of faith, baptism and membership in the Church… It is obvious also that the meaning of baptism is destroyed wherever it is no longer understood as an anticipatory gift but only as a self-contained rite.  Wherever it is severed from the catechumenate, baptism loses its raison d’etre [its reason to be]

I do not have this book, so I cannot check to see if this quote is even accurate. People like this have been known to lie about quotes. As we can see from the quote, it contains only part of the passage. This makes it impossible to judge the context.

It appears the Pope is making a point that Baptism is not a self-contained rite to itself, but is a deeper Sacrament that anticipates the gift of the Holy Spirit. This is true.

You have to understand that Dimond and his merry band of idiots think babies go to hell if they are not baptized, Protestants also go to hell. Apparently everyone goes to hell except them and those like them. I think they will have a rude awakening someday.

People who are this sick are not worth our time to deal with. Due to their delusions, they will not listen to reason, or the Church. They are divisive and cause scandal upon unsuspecting people who fall into their pit, er, I mean website.

The Bible gives us the answer of how to deal with people like this:

(Titus 3:9-11) "But avoid stupid controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels over the law, for they are unprofitable and futile. As for a man who is factious, after admonishing him once or twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is perverted and sinful; he is self-condemned."

Ignore them.

God bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
