Question Title Posted By Question Date
Understanding blood sacrifice and the Eucharist PJ Sunday, April 25, 2010

Question:

Today's second reading includes: They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

In order to be saved we must be covered and washed by Chrst's blood. We all know the lingo, but what is its meaning!?

a. This is elucive to the modern mind, but to pre-Christians, ancient Jews, and pagans of all stripes this concept has been understood since man has been on earth -- that blood heals, saves, and unites persons.

(Animal blood on thresholds and doorways kept families from evil spirits for pagans as well as Jews in the Exodus; the blood of animal and human sacrifice cleansed pagans as well as Jews and Christians (Christ for the latter); sharing and drinking of blood united persons for pagans and is the idea behind the Eucharist for Christians.)

b. Yet medical science and modern man would say this is nonsense.

c. Therefore, the blood sacrifice of Christ and our consuming of His blood in the Eucharist only makes sense to pre-modern man.

Then whose thinking is wrong on the nature of blood -- modern man or premodern man?

I have already answered this for you about the the meaning of the blood of Jesus: click here

The Church is "modern man" and we do not think it is nonsense.

St. Francis de Sales, in his Introduction to the Devout Life, said:

We can never please the world unless we lose ourselves together with it. ... We are crucified to the world and the world must be crucified to us. The world holds us to fools; let us hold it to be mad.

In otherwords, who cares what science or modern man thinks. They do not hold the ultimate Truth; God does.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
