guided prayer Mary Monday, April 5, 2010

Question:

Hello Brother, I hope you are well.

I was wondering if you could explain what guided prayer is, where one is given a piece of scripture by a guide and later comes back to meet the guide again to talk about it. What is a person supposed to be do with the reading, and what is the final aim when working with a guide.

How does this differ from bible study or lectio Divina.

Thanks Mary

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Mary:

This would be essentially the same thing as Lectio Divina where one reads a passage slowly and thoughtfully, contemplates upon it, experiencing it, reflecting upon how the passage relates to our lives, and listening carefully and quietly for the still small voice of God speaking to us through this passage.

As "Guided Prayer" the passage to be read is assigned by a Spiritual Director or other guide. Once the person has reflected upon the passage he returns to the Spiritual Director or guide to discuss the experience and reflection and what was learned from listening to the still small voice of God.

It can be very helpful to have guide in Lectio Divina to ensure that one's insights are really coming from God (as we can be fooled by our own psychology or by the Enemy). But mostly, the guide can help the person to explore the insights and reflections as to the meaning for the person's spiritual life. This is what a Spiritual Director does -- guide us in the spiritual life, to grow in the Christ-life, in spiritual maturity, and in intimacy to our Lord God and Father.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
