Deacon Blessing the Sick with the Eucharist | Deacon larry | Thursday, March 25, 2010 |
Question: When taking Holy Communion to patients in the hospital or nursing home and one is unable to receive (NPO, on vent or feeding tube, unconscious, etc.) is it permissable for the deacon to impart a blessing on the person with his pix containing the Eucharist? |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Deacon: As a deacon you can give blessings, and as a deacon you are an ordinary minister of Holy Communion. Thus, from my understanding anyway, you are able to give a blessing with the Eucharist, not just the Eucharist in the pyx, but holding the Host in your hand as you make the sign of the Cross over the person. Also, if the sick person cannot receive communion, there is the Blessing of the Sick found in the Book of Blessings. As a deacon you are permitted to lay hands on the sick person in the rubrics of this blessing. God Bless, Footer Notes: This forum is for general questions on the faith.
