Violating God's Plan? Miguel Tuesday, March 23, 2010

Question:

A few weeks ago, PBS showed an episode of its program "Frontline" called "The Suicide Tourist." (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/suicidetourist/view/) It was about with ALS who went to Switzerland to commit suicide. When discussing some of the objections to it, he said the most frequent one was that it violates God's plan. He countered by saying how we violate God's plan by using medical technology, using organ transplants and helping premature babies live. "God's plan was for this person to die" and we play "God" by trying change it. It was only when a person is suffering that we raise objections, he stated.

Unfortunately, I'm well-versed in countering such arguments, but I know this is a common one. What would your response be?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Miguel:

Well, if I may be blunt, this person is an idiot. It is not God's plan for people to prematurely die. Death by illness, accident, premature births, birth defects, murder, natural disasters, etc. are technically called "material evils". God does not perpetrate evil.

God has given us the gift of medicine to promote and facilitate life. I will bet that if this idiot is injured in a car accident, he will avail himself of medical technology. What a hypocrite.

Medicine faculitates life. Life is a gift from God and our life belongs to Him, not to ourselves. Suicide is robbing God of the life that is His to give and take.

The Catholic Catechism says of suicide:

Suicide

2280 Everyone is responsible for his life before God who has given it to him. It is God who remains the sovereign Master of life. We are obliged to accept life gratefully and preserve it for his honor and the salvation of our souls. We are stewards, not owners, of the life God has entrusted to us. It is not ours to dispose of.

2281 Suicide contradicts the natural inclination of the human being to preserve and perpetuate his life. It is gravely contrary to the just love of self. It likewise offends love of neighbor because it unjustly breaks the ties of solidarity with family, nation, and other human societies to which we continue to have obligations. Suicide is contrary to love for the living God.

2282 If suicide is committed with the intention of setting an example, especially to the young, it also takes on the gravity of scandal. Voluntary co-operation in suicide is contrary to the moral law.

Grave psychological disturbances, anguish, or grave fear of hardship, suffering, or torture can diminish the responsibility of the one committing suicide.

2283 We should not despair of the eternal salvation of persons who have taken their own lives. By ways known to him alone, God can provide the opportunity for salutary repentance. The Church prays for persons who have taken their own lives.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
