Downloading music James Sunday, January 31, 2010

Question:

Millions of people share there music, videos and programs around the world via the internet. I've recently downloaded some music using the .torrent system. Is it sinful?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear James:

If you are downloading music for free without the permission of the music company or the artist, then you are stealing the music. That is a sin.

Music artists have a right to be compensated for their work. It is how they make a living. Think of a case in which you write a song and other people download it without paying you a royalty.

Music companies are cracking down on this and even ordinary people like yourself are getting sued for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

As Christians we need to download music only when we pay for it, or when it is legitimately offered in public domain at no charge.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
