Question:

We know that our souls are immortal but it was created by God. Since God was not created but has existed forever which is more proper to say that God is eternal rather than say that God is immortal? Or do we use both?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Chas:

Eternal refers to having no beginning or end. Only God is eternal.

Immortal refers to created beings not being subject to death. Bodily immortality belonged to Adam and Eve before the Fall. Since the Fall, no man has bodily immortality.

Immortal Soul refers to a soul that has a beginning, but has no end. Our souls were created by God at the moment of our conception and will live forever in heaven or in hell after our bodily death.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
